Should I stop in Brisbane before starting a Cairns reef trip?

My Australia flight lands in Brisbane in October, but I plan to fly on to Cairns and work south over a month; I am unsure whether a few Brisbane days first improve the trip.

    Decide by flight recovery and the activities you want in Brisbane, not by a hope of controlling reef weather. Conditions change, so leave flexibility in Cairns regardless of the order.
