About Milquetoast

Tucked down an Elizabeth Street laneway in a repurposed garage, Milquetoast delivers artisan pours and monthly rotating plates in a warm, low-lit hideaway. High ceilings, vintage crockery, and unpretentious service set the rhythm. Enophiles head straight for the thoughtful cellar list—crisp fiano, chilled gamay, and Italian vintages paired with briny oysters and smoked bottarga. Tables consistently call for the hot chip butty on white bread, followed by slow-cooked lamb and fluffy house bread used to mop up every drop of carrot sauce. Operating walk-in only, the kitchen serves well past 10pm for anyone chasing a proper late-night meal in the CBD.

  • Artisan Wine List: Thoughtful cellar pours spanning local Australian estates, notable Italian vintages, and chilled gamay.
  • Monthly Rotating Plates: French-inflected share plates rotate on a monthly cycle alongside staples like the hot chip butty.
  • Intimate Laneway Space: A hidden laneway garage featuring high ceilings, warm ambient lighting, and vintage crockery.
  • Late-Night Walk-Ins: Full dining service continues past 10pm from an open kitchen operating strictly on walk-ins.

Before you head over

Practical advice on timing, arrivals, and dining late down the laneway

  • Arrive early for walk-in seating

Because the venue operates on a walk-in policy and can fill up quickly, aiming for an earlier arrival gives you the best chance of securing a table without a long wait.

  • Look closely down the discrete laneway

Tucked down a discrete, dark laneway off Elizabeth Street with minimal external signage, keep a close eye out when approaching so you do not walk straight past the entrance.

  • Count on late-night kitchen service

Unlike most CBD spots that shut kitchens early, the kitchen stays open for dinner service even after 10pm, making it a reliable choice for late dining.
